On May 8, 2026, it was announced that the JPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test had been adopted as one test for proving Japanese ability for admission to higher education institutions as defined by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
According to the announcement, JPT 525 or higher is the relevant score level. Because JPT is a score-based test rather than a pass-or-fail test, it may become another practical option for foreign students preparing to study in Japan.
Japanese ability levels listed by the Immigration Services Agency
The Immigration Services Agency explains that when an international student intends to receive classes or research guidance in Japanese at a university, junior college, graduate school, institution equivalent to a university, or college of technology, one of the following levels is used as a reference point.

Impact on students moving from Japanese language schools to higher education
For foreign students studying at Japanese language institutions, Japanese ability becomes especially important when moving on to universities or vocational schools where classes are conducted in Japanese.
Until now, JLPT N2, EJU and BJT have often been considered in practice. With JPT 525+ now listed, students may have another way to show their Japanese ability, instead of relying only on the timing and result of the JLPT.
However, JPT 525+ does not guarantee admission
It is important to understand that being listed as an Immigration reference point does not mean that JPT 525+ guarantees admission to a university or vocational school.
Whether a particular school accepts JPT, what score is required, and which academic year the rule applies to must be checked in that school’s latest application guidelines. The JPT score usage list also states that details and the latest information should be confirmed on each school’s or company’s official website.
Student Visa screening is not based only on Japanese test scores
In a Student Visa application, Japanese language proof is important, but it is only one part of the overall review. In practice, the following four perspectives should be checked.

For foreign nationals planning to study in Japan, having more options to prove Japanese language ability is a positive development. This may be especially helpful for students who are affected by the timing of JLPT test dates and results.
At the same time, Immigration examines not only test scores but also the purpose of study, ability to pay tuition and living expenses, previous immigration history and consistency of all submitted documents. Before school application, COE application or change of status application, it is important to review school requirements and immigration documents separately.
