About this page

This page summarizes key points that clients often ask before contacting Tommy’s Legal Service.

The answers below are general explanations. Individual assessments such as whether a status of residence applies, the likelihood of approval, strategy after a denial, or whether a company can accept Specified Skilled Workers usually require document review. Consultation / Booking

When is a paid consultation recommended?

A paid consultation is recommended when your matter requires an individual assessment, such as whether your status of residence can be renewed, whether a change of status is possible, how to proceed after a denial, what to do when your expiration date is close, or whether a company can accept Specified Skilled Workers.

If the matter cannot be assessed without reviewing documents, we cannot give a definite answer only through free messages.

How much is the consultation fee?

As a general rule, a 60-minute paid consultation is JPY 6,600 including tax. Depending on the amount of document review, urgency, or complexity, a different fee may be quoted in advance.

Should I send documents before the consultation?

Please send available documents in advance where possible. Useful documents include your residence card, employment contract, labor conditions notice, notices from Immigration, previous application copies, denial notices, or requests for additional documents.

You do not need to have everything ready before contacting us. Please send what you currently have.

Can I consult only by WhatsApp or LINE?

WhatsApp and LINE may be used as contact methods. However, many individual matters require document review, and we cannot make a definite assessment or guarantee the likelihood of approval only through short messages.

Fees / Payment

Is a retainer required when requesting services?

As a general rule, a 50% retainer is required before we start the work. The remaining balance is generally payable upon approval or before delivery.

Are there any costs in addition to the professional fee?

Government fees, revenue stamps, postage, translation fees, certificate issuance fees, travel expenses, and other actual costs are generally charged separately unless otherwise stated. Additional fees may apply for complex cases, urgent handling, additional explanations, distant travel, or special document preparation.

Can I pay by card or online payment?

Online payment may be available for some fees, such as consultation fees. Card or online payments may include an additional amount equivalent to payment processing fees. For bank transfers, the bank transfer fee is borne by the client.

What happens to the fee if an application is denied?

The treatment of fees depends on the engagement terms for each case. In general, the retainer for work already performed may not be refundable. After a denial, it is necessary to review the reason, analyze the issue, and consider whether reapplication is realistic.

Immigration Applications

I do not know which status of residence I should apply for.

The appropriate status of residence depends on your background, planned activities, employer, job duties, salary, family relationship, and past application history. If you are not sure which status applies, please use a paid consultation or inquiry form.

Can you guarantee approval?

No. Approval or denial is decided by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. We support the preparation process by reviewing the documents, activities, company-side materials, and practical points that may matter in the examination.

Can you handle cases close to the expiration date?

It may be possible depending on the situation. However, when the deadline is very close, the time available for collecting documents and considering options is limited. Please contact us as early as possible.

Can I consult you after a denial?

Yes. After a denial, we need to review the reason, previous application materials, notices from Immigration, and the current situation. Reapplication should not simply repeat the same materials; it is important to identify and address the issue.

Hiring Foreign Nationals

What should a company check before hiring a foreign national?

A company should check the person’s status of residence, expiration date, work permission, job duties, employment terms, salary, company business activities, and social insurance and tax compliance. In many work visa cases, the relationship between job duties and the person’s education or work experience is important.

Is renewal after changing jobs risky?

It requires careful review. After changing jobs, Immigration may examine the new employer’s business, job duties, employment terms, and the relationship between the applicant’s background and the new work. Whether proper notifications were filed after job changes may also matter.

Can you review company-side documents?

Yes. Depending on the application, we may review company brochures, registry certificates, financial statements, statutory record totals, employment contracts, and job duty descriptions.

Specified Skilled Worker / Registered Support Organization

Can I consult about accepting Specified Skilled Workers?

Yes. We review the business sector, job duties, employment structure, support system, council membership, and the company’s compliance status. It is important to check not only whether a worker is available, but also whether the accepting organization is ready.

Can I outsource support services to your office as a Registered Support Organization?

Tommy’s Legal Service is registered as a Registered Support Organization. We can discuss support outsourcing, regular interviews, periodic reports, and operation of the support plan depending on the case.

Can sending organizations or recruitment agencies consult you?

Yes. However, the points to check differ depending on the country, sector, recruitment scheme, accepting company, and compliance status. If you are considering cooperation, please provide an outline of the proposed scheme in advance.

Office Visit / Contact

Can I visit the office for consultation?

Office visits are by appointment in principle. Depending on the matter, we may ask you to send documents in advance so that we can review the situation before the consultation.

Where is the visitor entrance?

Our office is located at THE HUB Yokohama Motomachi 102. The building has more than one entrance. For visitors, please use the north-side entrance facing the river. The entrance is across from the ramen restaurant “Ban-nai”.

Can you provide support in English?

We can support clients in Japanese and English. However, when accurate review of documents or legal explanations is required, additional translation or explanation may be necessary.
