Important Notice for Visa Applicants from Nepal
Important Notice for Japan Visa Applicants in Nepal
If you are applying for a Japanese visa in Nepal, please note that the procedure is different from that in many other countries.
In Nepal, most applicants cannot submit their visa application directly to the Embassy of Japan. Instead, visa applications are handled through VFS Global, the service provider designated by the Embassy of Japan in Nepal.
Background
In many countries, once a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is issued in Japan, the applicant can apply for a visa directly at the Japanese embassy or consulate.
However, in Nepal, the Embassy of Japan states that visa applications and related inquiries are handled by VFS Global, and that the Embassy does not accept direct applications from individual applicants, except for diplomatic and official visas.
Visa Application Procedure in Nepal
- Obtain the COE from Japan, if your case requires one.
- Book an appointment through the VFS Global website.
- Prepare the required visa documents.
- Submit the visa application to VFS Global on the reserved date.
- VFS Global forwards the application to the Embassy of Japan.
- After the review is completed, receive your passport and visa, then prepare for travel to Japan.
Official guidance by the Embassy of Japan in Nepal
Processing Time
According to the Embassy of Japan in Nepal, visa issuance usually takes about 6 business days after submission to VFS Global.
However, if documents are incomplete or if careful examination is required, the review may take one to two months or longer. Applicants should therefore prepare and apply well in advance.
Key Reminders
- The Embassy of Japan in Nepal does not generally accept direct applications from individual visa applicants.
- For most applicants, VFS Global is mandatory.
- Appointment slots may become crowded during peak seasons, especially around student visa periods.
- Applicants should carefully check all required documents before submission.
Note on Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening
For certain Nepalese applicants, a TB Clearance Certificate may also be required when applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or a visa. However, this is not a Nepal-only rule, so it should be understood separately from the Nepal-specific VFS submission procedure.
